Looking Into Presidential Abuse of Power

Editorial Team

The Trump Justice Department has launched a formal investigation into the pardons issued by former President Joe Biden during his final days in office.

This probe focuses on concerns about Biden's mental competence and the legitimacy of the pardons, many of which were signed using an autopen—a device that automatically signs documents.

Among the pardons under scrutiny are those granted to Biden's son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted on federal gun and tax evasion charges. The investigation aims to determine whether Biden was mentally fit to authorize these pardons and whether the use of the autopen was appropriate in this context.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is leading a parallel investigation, suggesting that Biden may be called to testify about his cognitive health and the use of the autopen.

We don’t get any satisfaction out of pointing out whatever everyone in Washington knew and no one in the media told us. Cognitive decline is a sad reality that visits too many families in America. So, who was in control of our government?

The investigation follows allegations that Biden's staff may have used the autopen without his full awareness, raising questions about the validity of the pardons.

The investigation also includes pardons granted to other family members and over 30 executive actions signed in late 2024.

Critics argue that the use of the autopen in these cases could indicate that Biden was not fully engaged in the decision-making process, potentially undermining the legitimacy of these actions. So who was!?

While the use of an autopen is legally permitted, the key issue is whether Biden was aware and consenting to its use in these specific instances.

The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the validity of the pardons and the accountability of those involved.

Presidential abuse of power is a serious issue. But abusing the president’s power is a crime that is much more serious.

This investigation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in the exercise of presidential powers.

It also highlights the need for vigilance in ensuring that such powers are not misused or abused, particularly in the final days of an administration.

As the investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the critical role that oversight and the rule of law play in upholding the integrity of our democratic institutions.
