Working to End a War

Editorial Team

When the world’s bloodiest conflict drags into its third year, you don’t send in the usual diplomatic choir—you send in the closer.

This past Saturday, President Donald Trump announced that he’ll pick up the phone on Monday for separate calls with President Vladimir Putin, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and key NATO leaders—each conversation aimed squarely at hammering out a ceasefire to halt what he rightly calls a “bloodbath” costing over 5,000 lives every single week.

That kind of urgency doesn’t wait for consensus; it demands action.

This isn’t Trump’s first rodeo in high-stakes diplomacy. Only weeks ago in Istanbul, Russian and Ukrainian envoys met for the first direct talks in months—only to walk away with little more than a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap and no ceasefire in sight.

That’s the largest prisoner swap in the conflict!

Europe and Washington had rallied behind a 30-day truce proposal, which Kyiv accepted and Moscow rebuffed, proving that peace on paper doesn’t always survive the first handshake.

Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy has been crisscrossing Europe—sit‑downs in Rome with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, strategy huddles with Germany’s Friedrich Merz and other allied leaders—all to set the stage for Trump’s intervention.

Yet Russia answered with its largest drone barrage since 2022, launching 273 drones at Ukrainian cities even as diplomats plotted their next move.

Here’s the rub: Ukraine insists on unconditional terms, while Russia demands concrete concessions, and neither side will bend without seeing the other’s cards.

It’s a negotiation labyrinth—one that few would dare to navigate without a dealmaker who thrives on the heat of the moment. Trump himself has declared that no real resolution is possible without his direct involvement, and he’s right.

That’s why our editorial team applauds this gambit. Critics will call it risky; we call it necessary.

When the stakes are this high, you don’t wait for perfect conditions—you create them. With President Trump dialing into both capitals, there’s a genuine chance we’ll see peace not in the distant pages of history, but in the coming days.

Here’s hoping that by week’s end, the war drums in Kyiv and Moscow fall silent—and the world witnesses a deal that brings real, lasting calm to Eastern Europe.
